Not every winter day has to start on two skis. Those who choose not to ski in Saalbach Hinterglemm are rewarded with 140 kilometers of cleared winter hiking trails, an illuminated toboggan run, a snow-reliable high-altitude cross-country trail, and long afternoons in the steam bath. The Glemm Valley is one of the few ski destinations where off-piste activities are not an afterthought, but a distinct experience in their own right.
Right in the heart of it all lies the wellness and lifestyle hotel Alpin Juwel, run by the Schwabl family. From the front door, it is just a few steps to the Reiterkogel cable car, the winter hiking trail, and the local bus stop. The ski bus pulls up, and your car can simply stay parked.
The 140 kilometers of winter hiking trails are fully groomed and well-signposted. Those looking for a gentle stroll can follow the valley path along the Saalach river; those seeking elevation can hike up to the sunny plateaus—or take the cable car up and simply walk back down.
Guided snowshoe tour. Once a week, a guided tour takes you off the cleared paths and directly into deep powder snow. High-quality rental equipment, including snowshoes and poles, is available free of charge at the Alpin Juwel reception. No prior experience is required—if you can hike, you can snowshoe.
Sun Ticket for pedestrians. With the Sun Ticket, guests without skis can easily use the cable cars. This makes lunch together on a sunny mountain terrace possible: some arrive straight from the slopes, others from the panoramic trail, and everyone meets at the same table.
The high-altitude trail in Hinterglemm sits at 1,100 to 1,400 meters and remains in great condition even when the snow turns softer down in the valley. Both classic and skating styles are well-supported. Additionally, valley trails run along the Saalach right through the Talschluss.
For longer distances, the cross-country centers in Zell am See-Kaprun and Saalfelden are just a 20- to 25-minute drive away—an excellent half-day trip, especially when fresh snow is falling in the valley.
After a day out in the crisp, cold air, the second half of your holiday day is just as essential as the first.
