Climbing in Saalbach Hinterglemm

The Pinzgauer Grasberge mountains surrounding the Alpin Juwel in Hinterglemm are primarily renowned for their lush alpine meadows, long mountain bike descents, and vast hiking trails. However, if you look up, a second, vertical side of the region reveals itself: from the high ropes course in the valley head to challenging via ferratas in the neighboring limestone massifs. Beginners, families with adventurous children, and experienced alpinists will all find their perfect terrain here – and our hotel is located right in the center of the action.

Climbing Highlights Directly in Saalbach Hinterglemm

Saalbach Hinterglemm High Ropes Course in the Valley Head

Located at the far end of the Hinterglemm valley is the high ropes course, which is considered the largest in Europe. The impressive key facts of the area:

  • Infrastructure: Spanning a total length of over eight kilometers, around 200 stations and 30 zip lines are distributed across levels between three and 40 meters high.
  • Courses: Ten climbing courses cover all levels of difficulty – from low-to-the-ground and family-friendly to physically demanding challenges in the treetops.
  • For Families: For the youngest climbers, there is the Mini-Kids Course, suitable for children from three years of age; the regular courses are open to anyone with a minimum body height of 130 centimeters.

The most distinctive highlight is the Mega Flying Fox: strapped in a prone position, you fly through the air at heights of around 120 meters and speeds of up to 80 km/h across the valley. The high ropes course can be reached in just a few minutes by car or the local resort bus and combines perfectly with the neighboring Treetop Trail and the Golden Gate Bridge of the Alps.

Jump & Slide Park – Climbing with a Refreshing Splash

Located directly at the source of the Saalach river at the end of the valley, the Jump & Slide Park playfully combines climbing with the element of water. Bouldering elements positioned directly above the water surface, a jump tower, and extensive trampoline areas make the park particularly appealing to teenagers and the young at heart looking for a refreshing cool-down after tackling vertical meters.

Via Ferratas and Alpine Climbing in the Surrounding Area

Those looking for real, alpine rock faces can easily reach some of the most beautiful via ferratas and climbing areas in the Eastern Alps within a short drive from the Alpin Juwel.

Via Ferratas in Leogang and Fieberbrunn

Thanks to our direct proximity to the interconnected Skicircus region, the rugged faces of the Leoganger Steinberge and the Kitzbühel Alps are within quick reach:

  • Marokka Via Ferrata (Fieberbrunn): This via ferrata above Fieberbrunn (difficulty rating B/C, summit at 1,992 m) is exceptionally well-secured throughout. It is ideal for ambitious beginners as well as families with prior via ferrata experience. Beginners are advised to hire a mountain guide. A key highlight is the airy suspension bridge along the route, which can be bypassed if desired. The summit rewards climbers with magnificent, plunging views down to the Wildsee lake.
  • Southern Leoganger Steinberge: These mountains offer additional demanding, alpine classics for experienced alpinists looking to conquer steep, rugged limestone walls.

Steinplatte Waidring and Loferer Steinberge

About an hour's drive away lies one of the most famous climbing areas in the region. The Steinplatte offers a sunny high plateau with over 100 sport climbing routes in solid limestone, as well as the historic "s'Schuastagangl" via ferrata (difficulty rating C, summit at 1,848 m).

Fascinating detail on the side: The rock faces of the Steinplatte belong to a prehistoric, fossilized coral reef from the Triassic period – during the descent, this ancient history can be explored vividly at the adjacent Triassic Park.

Bad-Weather Alternative: Indoor Climbing

Should the alpine weather in Salzburg Land take a turn, there is no need to miss out on your vertical training. The Felsenfest Climbing Hall in Saalfelden is one of the most modern facilities in Austria, offering indoor sports at an absolute premium level:

  • Around 1,700 m² of climbing surface with a wall height of 17.5 meters and route lengths up to 22 meters.
  • Over 250 lead climbing routes and more than 150 bouldering routes across both indoor and outdoor areas.
  • For families with younger children, the region also offers child-friendly indoor bouldering options.
